11:31 pm - Back to Life
|
Putting life into some type of time frame, 2005 was an intense year for me. So much of my life changed; so many lives were changed. Where am I now? I feel as though I am in the best state I have been in years. It feels good to have my feet back on the road and enjoying the road they are on.
So what has been going on…? Music mainly. I have been writing new songs and should be ready to play shows by sometime this summer. I have been recording the stuff that is finished and writing new stuff as well. I have decided that all I really enjoy doing is playing music, so why not completely devote myself to it. I have been using all of my money from my new job to buy instruments and save up for a new van for touring. I really would like to find some very close friends who I could be life partners in music. I would love to find people who I could develop a very close friendship with that will work hard and we would constantly motivate ourselves to do more and always work harder.
For the first time in over five years I have not been drinking. I have not had anything to drink since September 17 2005 in Bowling Green. I may decide to drink again someday but it will not be anytime soon. Not blaming anything totally on alcohol but I have made some rather poor choices while being out of it. Some day when I feel that I have better control; I may have a couple of beers with friends, until then I will be outside cycling or playing music instead of being trapped in a house with a bottle(s) in my hands.
I am so excited about 2006. I hope to finish a new lp by summer. Most of my favorite bands, groups, and ensembles are releasing new material this spring and summer. The new Apple/Intel Computers will be out this year. And I will be able to see Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips this summer. TRAVEL is the highlight of this year! I have so much vacation time saved; I plan on using it all.
Goals for this next week are talking to old friends and going to see French Toast in Nashville. I can not wait to hear French Toast as a trio.

12:32 pm - Weekend
|
|
My weekend in the mountains was great and it was pretty cheap too! I was able to drive a vehicle that used way less gas than my truck, only one and a half tanks of gas up and back. There was no intense excitement on the trip except when I walked past a hotel and looked up at the rooms and some dude was undressing with his curtains open, I only witnessed some middle age man ass but it got me thinking... What pleasure do you receive from having people watch you? I do not mean this in any type of insult; I just have a hard time understanding it. Knowing everyone is different, what has happened to make this type of action a turn-on for this guy to remove his clothes in front of a highly traveled tourist strip (no pun) of town? Of course it could have been chance but I am thinking not.
Luckily I did stay in an area of town with fewer tourists. Driving through Pigeon Forge was sad. I did not travel the town extensively but first and lasting impressions made me wonder, where are the locals, really what do they do? I thought about how desperate it would feel to live in this town. Past the funnel cake stands, candy stores, airbrush shirts, go-carts, putt-putt golf, outlet malls, and taffy how would you keep yourself sane in a town like this? Well now thinking about it the naked man in front of the window could have been a local, hmmmm. The Pigeon Forge area did hold one thing for me that I will remember for awhile, The Stone Mountain Brewery. The SMB was a microbrewery that had two of the best thing I have had in my life thus far, beer and pizza (pizza that was made in a wood fire stone oven). I choose a Velas Hellas style lager to drink and it was so damn good.
The mountains were beautiful. You can feel fall moving in, the cool morning with coffee were amazing. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I wish there was some small country that weather held all the good aspects of fall, I would move there.
I am unsure where to travel to next. Until I am able to get a few weeks off to be able to leave the country I think I am just going to keep taking short weekend trips. There are a lot of places I have never been that are so close.
Today’s weather is perfect for cycling so I plan on spending a couple of hours after work in the Barnsburg area pedaling. Later tonight I am going to continue working on some new music I am piecing together.
Here are a few photos I took over the weekend...

2:05 pm - Out of Town
|
|
I am excited to get out of Somerset (KY) this weekend. I will be
staying in the Smokey Mountains this weekend. I am staying in a one
room cabin. I am hoping the cabin I reserved is far enough in the woods
to separate me from the tourist area. I will post photos of my trip.
I just finished watching a documentary on Macintosh programmer Andy Hertzfeld. If you’re into Macs or if you are a computer geek I recommend watching it.
I want to travel to Japan! Wanna see why?
Nathan since your past time has included some pranking check out this list I found; here you go!

9:29 am - Sleep Over
|
These are random thoughts reflecting the first night I was ever allowed to stay at a sleep over with friends and how past becomes present:
I was 10 years old. I was psyched! My parents were weird about letting me stay places; they thought I would tear shit up and steal GI Joe’s (word). I was a pretty shy kid so without the influence of others I was a decent youngster.
The house in which 8 children would inflict pain upon was the Flynn residence (located in Somerset KY). We were there to celebrate Scott’s eleventh birthday. Such an awesome time was to be had. Scott’s family was not completely rich; to say, but holy shit the dude had tons of toys. I remember he had the G. I. Joe Aircraft Carrier and Castle Grayskull play set (the one with the death metal microphone). I was down with Star Wars toys and that was about it but his house was the real deal with a lot of cool shit.
The night was wild, (as wild as can be for ten year olds) pizza (Little Creaser’s pan pan fuck yea!), ice cream cake, movies, and cable TV. My parents rolled with the old style satellite that you could skateboard in if you wanted too, so I missed most anything TV wise growing up. Sometimes on the satellite we would pick up a station with the cartoon Hecliff that would play episode after episode for twelve hours but other than that it served no purpose. Luckily my parents finally gave in and went the cable route a few years later.
Anyways I was exposed to so many cool things that night. One was a VCR. Predator had just been released on VHS and Scott’s mom had hooked us up. Eating pizza while watching gross stuff; who could ask for anything more. Later we watched MTV; during this time I was exposed to the Beastie Boys. Later Scott went back to his room and between the mattresses he revealed the Holy Grail to a ten year old boy, The Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Issue. That night I had a great time, I really was not close friends with any one there but just getting out of my house was so liberating. After being yelled at by Scott’s parent many times through out the night (due to everyone being rowdy) everyone finally went to sleep.
The next morning was way different than the night before. Everyone woke up around 9:00-10:00am I was the last to wake up. When I did wake up everyone had already been dressed and had ate breakfast. By the time I had put my clothes back on and went to the restroom I heard everyone go outside. I looked out the window and the seven guys were running towards to woods. The night before Scott said that he was going to take us to a fort that he had build there. I went outside but by the time I had, they were gone. I tried looking for them, no dice. I went back inside and sat. I was shy so I did not say much to Scott’s parents; I thought the other kids would be back soon, but it was getting to be around noon. Scott’s mother finally approached me and knowing what had happened asked me if I needed a ride home. I told her yes. After gathering up my clothes and putting them in her car she asked if I was hunger. I told her I would eat at my mom’s house. On the way home Scott’s mom pulled into Mc Donald’s and bought me a happy meal. I did not get to eat out much so that was awesome. After pulling into my house she also made me take ten dollars from her. She had told me that she was giving ten dollars to everyone that stayed the night at her house. I was ten and bought into, years later of course I know this not to be true. I never told my mom about getting the money. Although my mom would have thought it was sweet of Scott’s mother, she would not have wanted me to keep the money. Scott’s mother is a very kind person. Although I have not saw Scott in about twelve years, I see his mom every once in awhile.
Recently something close to this happened again. I was visiting people out of town and had a pretty good time that night. Friends had talked and ate at an apartment house for hours, good food and times. Later we decided it would be good to go for a walk. It was getting late in the hour and the night air felt awesome. After we walked for a few minutes we all stopped and looked at a dark but beautiful grassy pasture. I decided to sit down after many minutes of looking at an addictive airplane warning tower blink in the distance. After sitting for a short time I noticed that I was alone, I had no clue where anyone had went. I tried to go back to the house where I was staying and knocked but there was no answer. I went back to my car and fell asleep while waiting. I was told everyone tried to wake me when they had returned. I woke up the next morning around daybreak (6:30am). I knocked on the apartment door but there was no answer. For awhile I was confused and was not even sure if they had returned from the walk the night before. At that time I did not know they had seen me asleep in my car. So I left and went to phone their cell. Someone answered and said that they were asleep in the house and to knock loud. So I returned and did but no one came to the door.
At this point I did not know what to do so I just took off driving. I was hunger so I went to a Shoney’s and had a fruit plate and a cup of coffee. After sitting there for a while I thought I would drive around town and really see what was there. I ended up at a park that was giving hot air balloon rides. I pulled in and watched them for about twenty minutes. I wanted to go on a ride but it was way too expensive. I left there and wanted to get another cup of coffee. The only place open beside Shoney’s was a McDonalds, so I traveled the drive through and got a cup. There was a trash can about 10 feet after the drive though on the drives side, I pulled up next to it threw in a bag and did not notice how close I was to this damn thing. As I started to drive away my driver side mirror caught the top of the trash can and ended up knocking the thing over. I was too embarrassed to do the right then and ended up peeling out of there. That morning I also bought a new bike jersey and later in the day went to a flee market and bought a really nice direct drive turntable for ten bucks.
I think both events now serve me as a good reminder as not to expect things. When you expect or get disappointed over things you close your self off to an adventure that you could possible have. Although my adventures were not that exciting they both ended up being rad times.

Tonight Flaherty-Corsano Duo with FME!
This weekend I am driving to Oneida, Tennessee to check out a scooter, the fellow has a 2003 Silver Stella. Hopefully it will be somewhere in my price range. I am also checking out the Baron Retro 150cc. Between riding the scooter and my bike to work I should save a ton of money. It is 20 miles one way to my work and the scooter gets 90 miles to the gallon.
My life has changed allot in this past month. I have spent my entire summer at home composing music, which is great but for the next few weeks I am going to get out-side and cycle more and travel.
Speaking of travel, I have only been on a train once in my life. It was on Movement Three's first tour with Pikadori. We took a train from New Jersey to New York. I am planning on taking a train from Louisville to Chicago to visit my friend Rick (hoping to talk him into doing some recording while I am there). Other stuff that is happening… I am loosing my recording studio space but I am going to move all of the equipment into my apartment and do recordings there. I am also listing a bunch of stuff on eBay this weekend including bikes, records, shirts, and music gear; my eBay user name is soundsofsomerset if you want to check any of it out. I am hoping to sell enough stuff to be able to buy a Surly Steamroller frame.
Micah, Chris, Nathan, and James V… See you guys tonight!

10:16 am - Shows !
|
Here are some links for upcoming shows in Lexington. If anyone would like a ride from the Somerset area I would enjoy the company. I am excited to see Matt Weston again. On the last Movement Three tour he set up a show for us at the Flywheel in Easthampton, MA with HTML/Rick Gribenas, and Aimee Norwich. Rick actually set up the show but I was pleasantly surprised when we showed up to the show and Matt was there. I had met him a month earlier in Lexington at a performance at The Mecca and he is a sweet dude.

12:54 pm - First Entry/Worst Entry?
|
Preface: Happy to be moving toward thirty, still need to grow up (people say), spend allot of time on my bicycle, love cooking for my friends, a new rekindled love for reading, only watch movies on my tv (sometimes Saturday night live, or PBS) I already mentioned it but I love cooking!, into gardening, traveling, playing and recording music, meeting new people, leaving town with people I barely know only to come back into town as best friends, going to shows, Buddhism... although my current actions so shatter and make this aspect of my life laughable, realizing I am wrong to better improve my life, spending time with my dogs, jazz shows, diy, touring, friends, friends, friends! Building furniture/carpentry, addicted to my ipod, records.
